About Kirwee
Kirwee is situated on The Great Alpine Highway (State Highway 73) to the West Coast – just 20 minutes west of Christchurch airport and 30 minutes from central Christchurch. It is home to some 2,700 inhabitants and is only 9km from the township of Darfield, which has supermarkets, cafes, hair dressers, pubs, wine bars and more!
The name Kirwee was brought from India by Col. De Renzie James Brett, and is the only Indian name on the main rail line from Lyttleton, in Christchurch to Greymouth on the West Coast. A monument in his memory is situated on Highway 73 in Kirwee.
Kirwee is a quaint rural community. The quiet and relaxing atmosphere is enhanced by the large recreation facilities including tennis courts, bowling green, rugby fields and children's playground and is also serviced by a service station and the local tavern . These facilities are all within walking distance from our home. Your hosts can arrange for you jet boat rides, horse trekking, farm shows 4x4 tours in the high country and fishing. There are numerous ski fields on our back door, that are accessible within an hours drive, and if you enjoy golf there are numerous courses that you can try.
The TransAlpine Express passenger train passes through each morning, returning in the afternoon, on a spectacular trip through the southern alps to Greymouth. A corporate cab is available for your travel arrangements from the airport or to the city and from Kirwee you can easily go on day trips to some fantastic spots in the local region, such as Akaroa or Hanmer Springs.
